What your teen gets
Tessera is a conversational AI companion for teens aged 14 to 19 who are thinking about college — and what comes after. It gets to know your kid through short, casual sessions, not clinical assessments or one-shot exams: twelve sessions of about 5–10 minutes each, grouped into three milestones, over roughly three weeks.
The point is that it ends. Your teen isn't signing up for an open-ended habit — they're walking a short path with a visible finish line, and at the end of it they have a career direction and the reasoning behind it.

What it costs, and what you keep
The mirror is free. The map is paid.
Who your teen is — the First Read and Personal Insights milestones — is free. Where that points — the career paths, the majors, the match — is an annual subscription. That's the whole pricing model, and your teen sees it at onboarding rather than discovering it at week three.
Your subscription expires. Your report does not.
Every insight already generated stays readable permanently, frozen as it was. Lapse, and you keep the artifact — we archive, we never delete. Resubscribe and it picks back up.
Conversations are never blocked
The subscription gates the career report, not the chats. Your teen can keep talking to Tessera either way.

Why your teen actually finishes
Three weeks only works if your teen keeps showing up for three weeks, and the usual reason they don't is that the thing gets boring. So the sessions deliberately aren't all the same:
Conversations
Open questions about their life, answered in their own words, with Tessera following the interesting thread rather than working down a list.
Guessing games
Tessera ventures a read on your teen and asks how close it got. Teens enjoy correcting it, and a confident "no, not at all" is as informative as a yes.
Quick yes/no quizzes
Short, fast rounds of yes/no and would-you-rather with almost no typing — the format that still gets done on a night with homework and practice.
Your teen also sets the tone, and can change it whenever they like — anywhere from light and playful to genuinely philosophical.
This is not decoration. A teen who finds the format tolerable answers honestly, and honest answers are the entire input to everything Tessera concludes. Variety is how a three-week commitment survives contact with a real teenager's week.
Where we draw the line on certainty
Tessera distinguishes what it actually knows from what it's inferring, and it says which is which. Interests and personality traits come from scored responses across many conversations. The career suggestions built on top of them are reasoned from established psychology — they are informed, not measured, and we label them that way.
That is also why you will never see an "87% match" anywhere in Tessera. Matching a teen's profile to a career is a judgement grounded in theory, not a calibrated measurement, and putting a decimal point on it would imply a precision that does not exist. Tessera says "these tend to go well together, and here's why" — which is the honest version of the same claim.
The same honesty applies to the research underneath. Some of Tessera's design rests on published findings; some of it is our own judgment call in light of them. The research basis says plainly which is which.

We designed Tessera with safety as a first principle, for your teen and for your family.
Anonymous by design
No last name, email, phone, or address is ever collected from your teen. Nothing can be traced back to them as a person.
Guardrails on every message
A dedicated AI scores each response in real time for relevance, tone, and manipulation. Repeated issues end the session automatically.
Private conversations
You never see the chats — only the interest and personality insights your teen chooses to share. Nothing is used for ads or AI training.
What we collect (and why)
From your teen:
- First name (so Tessera knows what to call them)
- Age and birthday month/day (to adapt the conversation to their age)
- Grade level (to provide age-appropriate context)
- Gender (optional, can be skipped)
- State (to understand regional context)
- School type: public, private, charter, or homeschool (for relevant conversation topics)
- GPA range (optional, can be skipped)
- Session summaries (short recaps of each conversation, not the full conversation text)
- Interest and personality insights derived from those conversations
None of this is personally identifiable. We never ask for a last name, email, phone number, or address. Even we cannot look up a specific teen by name, because there is nothing to search by.
From you: name, email address, and relationship to the teen. That is it.
All data is stored securely in the cloud, encrypted and protected. We never sell or disclose any data to third parties for advertising, analytics, or marketing. The only third-party services that receive data are our infrastructure and AI providers (Anthropic and AWS), solely to operate the app.
What the AI does (and does not do)
The AI asks questions and provides positive encouragement. That is all.
- It does not give advice or suggestions.
- It does not lead your teen toward any particular answer or direction.
- It does not take any actions on behalf of your teen.
- It does not use conversations for AI training or share them with third parties beyond what is needed to operate the service.
Tessera's AI is provided by Anthropic (makers of Claude). Each message is processed in real time. Anthropic may temporarily retain API data for up to 30 days for trust and safety purposes, after which it is deleted. Under Anthropic's API terms, your teen's conversations are not used to train their models.
The AI adapts its tone and language to your teen's age; younger teens get a more playful, scenario-based style, while older students get a more direct and practical tone. Your teen can choose their preferred conversation style during setup.
Built-in guardrails
Every single response your teen gives is evaluated in real time across multiple dimensions: relevance to the topic, tone, politeness, and whether there is any attempt to manipulate or misuse the conversation. If a response falls outside acceptable bounds, Tessera flags it immediately. Repeated issues stop the session automatically.
This is not a simple keyword filter. Tessera uses a dedicated AI model to evaluate each answer on a numeric scale before the conversation moves forward. Off-topic, hostile, or manipulative inputs are caught and handled before they can affect the experience.
Age-appropriate by design
Tessera is for ages 14 to 19 only. Users under 14 are blocked during setup. The app does not collect any information that could identify your teen as a person. Your teen's conversations are private. You can see their interest and personality insights if they choose to share them, but never the conversations themselves.

What Tessera is not
Not a general chatbot
It has one job: helping college-bound teens discover the career paths that fit who they are. It can't be used for homework, socializing, or open-ended chat.
Not a therapist
Tessera does not provide mental health support, emotional advice, or personal guidance of any kind.
Not a social companion
It never initiates contact or sends messages. Your teen picks it up when they want and puts it down when they're done.
Not a recommendation engine
It doesn't push your teen toward specific schools or careers. It helps them understand themselves — the choices are always theirs.

Take the pressure off
"What do you want to do with your life?" is one of the hardest questions a teen can hear, and one of the hardest for a parent to ask without it turning into a tense conversation. Tessera takes that pressure out of the equation. Your teen explores these questions at their own pace, in their own words, through natural conversations with an AI that just listens and asks good questions.
When insights emerge, your teen can choose to share them with you, giving you both something concrete to talk about instead of starting from scratch every time.

Tessera is not guessing. It uses two well-established frameworks from vocational and personality psychology — one that maps career interests across six dimensions, and another that maps five core personality traits.

Together, these two models let Tessera do something powerful: map your teen's interests onto career paths, then check whether their personality is a natural fit for those paths. It can pick up on synergies, like a creative teen who also thrives on structure (great for architecture or UX design). It can also flag potential friction points early, like strong social interests paired with a preference for working independently.
Pairing interests with personality is not something we invented, and we would rather be straight about that: it is standard practice in career guidance. What is different is who can actually get it. Done properly it normally means two separate paid assessments and an appointment with someone trained to read them together, which is why most teens never see it and end up with a free interest quiz instead. Tessera runs the same cross-check automatically, out of conversations your teen has on their own phone.
